As part of our 1Medical Team Profile we speak with Simon Hemsley – Manager of Subspecialties to learn more about him and his work:

How long have you worked in medical recruitment?

Coming into my 9th year of medical recruitment experience now, all of which has been specifically working with doctors.

I spent my first few years working in the UK market for 3 years after University prior to moving to Australia.

I have now been active in the Australia market for 6 years and more recently have also added New Zealand to my portfolio.

What is it you like about working in medical recruitment?

Everyday is different. I enjoy the feeling that I am giving back to society by supporting struggling locations secure the cover they need. Another great aspect is seeing the doctors I assist achieve their career goals and dreams.

The consultative approach in which I work allows the development of life-long relationships with the doctors and hospitals we help.

Our focus is always helping both the doctor and clients achieve their outcomes.

What specific sector do you cover?

At 1Medical I manage the Subspecialties team, which includes Medicine, Paediatrics, ICU, O&G, Surgery and Anaesthetics.

This involves working with the following colleges:

  • Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP),
  • College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM),
  • Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG),
  • Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS),
  • Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA).

In the past I have also extensively worked in Emergency Medicine sector in conjunction the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM), meaning I have gained a broad knowledge across many sectors of the medical market.

What are the current market trends / outlook for your sector?

There is a consistent and significant demand for locum cover across all grades from PGY3+ to Specialist. This includes occasional shifts to supplement income around existing work commitments or full-time locum options to achieve a lifestyle balance. There are options available on an on-going basis for both.

I am also finding doctors wanting to find a better work / life balance for their working life includes more variety in their clinical options, both of which the locum world can provide.

What are the main skill sets that are in need?

The skills required are in line with the specific dynamics of Australian Healthcare system which in general means the further distance away from a metro location the more of a generalist skill set is required.

Main specialist services such as Medicine, Obstetrics, Anaesthetics and Surgery are required in most regional towns across Australia and New Zealand.

More Sub-Speciality skills sets are required in the larger towns and in the more metropolitan cities.

PGY 2/3 grade / Senior House Officer (SHO) grade work and upwards is available across the entire network in both countries.

What are the main locations you are searching for?

From metro to regional to rural and remote, we assist all public hospitals and private facilities Australia and New Zealand wide.

The diversity of Australia and New Zealand means we have positions available from wonderful coastal holiday locations to some of the most remote locations in the world, meaning there is something for every doctor and their families.

We have talked about Locum but what about the permanent prospects in your sector?

In terms of demand there is as much of a need for permanent doctors as there is for locum coverage.

The higher volume locum work tends to be more of general specialist work to supplement the more sub-speciality permanent work that is taking place.

As population growth has increased in some regional centres it has meant that specialist services have also been expanded meaning more permanent positions are available

Visiting Medical Officers (VMO’s) provide a significant amount of specialist work across Australia and 1Medical are also able to provide options for permanent retained contracts for doctor seeking these structures.

What do you get up to in your spare time?

I like to read, relax on the beach and exercise when I can.

Be it via work or personal travel I like to try and explore Australia especially now as I recently became a citizen!

Any opportunity to hit the slopes on a snowboard is always taken…

Why should a doctor or client contact you today?

They should contact me to have an honest, consultative and diligent recruiter assist them with sourcing options best suited to their specific needs.

I would recommend any doctor or hospital to get in touch for a genuine and transparent experience provided by someone who truly cares about their outcomes.
