As part of our 1Medical Team Profile we speak with Benjamin Griffin – Senior Consultant | Mental Health to learn more about him and his work:
I have now worked in medical recruitment in Australia for nearly 6 years, prior to that I was in senior level headhunting in the UK for a couple of years post university.
At University I studied Psychology and I started out my career working in a Secure Forensic Mental Health Inpatient unit with the NHS.
It gives me great satisfaction when I am assisting hospitals in urgent need of doctors. Knowing that you are playing a part in ensuring an increase in health service standards within the organisations that you work with and the populations that they cover is a very fulfilling feeling.
At 1Medical I cover the Mental Health, specifically placing Psychiatry doctors. This includes all levels from junior doctors just starting out their career in Psychiatry through to Consultant level (Specialist) Psychiatrists.
I work closely in conjunction with the The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP).
We are currently seeing a strong demand across Australia for both Consultant Psychiatrists and Psychiatry non-specialists (registrars, career medical officers, senior medical officers and resident medical officers (RMO’s).
The health services that we are assisting are regularly in need of both permanent and locum doctors.
For locum work, the job duration ranges from short term 1 week placements, up to placements of 3 months or even longer (NB, locum positions can often be extended for longer time periods if desired).
Psychiatry has several sub specialisms however the main demand we see across the market is usually for the following areas:
If you focus on another sub specialism in mental health I would not let this deter you from getting in touch as we may still be able to help.
Demand is currently high nationwide, with positions available in all states. It is well publicised that there is a shortage and imbalance of mental health staff, across Australia and this is also part of a wider international trend which is not just restricted to doctors.
In addition to Australia we are also seeking doctors to assist with New Zealand based opportunities as NZ is a part of the 1Medical portfolio.
As mentioned above there is a strong permanent demand for doctors to fill permanent posts across most areas of the market.
We can assist with all aspects of a doctor’s career from junior doctors securing their first post in psychiatry, senior doctors securing their first specialist post or making looking to take their next step in career progression.
For international doctors there is scope to secure suitable hospital positions to make the move to Australia or New Zealand.
During my spare I enjoy exploring the great outdoors, reading, music and taking time to practice mindfulness.
I also take a strong interest in health and well-being.
